By HOLLY EPSTEIN OJALVO
Do you look to a basketball player like Jeremy Lin or another high-profile person as a source of pride and inspiration?

  1. A high profile person that I look at as a source of inspiration is a female pop singer Rhianna. Rhianna is inspirational to me because she has been through a lot since she has become an artist, she faces harsh criticism on a daily basis and even had to deal with an abusive relationship but still manages to entertain her fans with her music. Being in high school I deal with a lot of criticism myself and by watching Rhianna I became inspired to keep focusing on pursing my dreams because I know that if she can deal with news reporters, paparazzi, and other entertainers constantly criticizing her I know that I can deal with high school students.

  2. ` I have serval people who inspire me, but the two that inspire me the most are Adele, Jessie J and Lady Gaga and my mother. I chose these four because they all taught me different ways of seeing things and interacting with people. Including the way I think about things. Lady Gaga herself is a conversation, but what others don't see about her is the style, the way she thinks, and the meaning. She herself is a human being trying to get a point across. So she does this by music, because in our society we listen to music above all things. She expresses herself by her fashion and statements through her videos. Not only that but during interviews, like the Ellen show for example, she expresses her points of view, distress and opinions. Jessie J expresses her emotions through her videos. Adele does the same as well, but she uses her power voice to get the message across. Her lyrics are enough to touch your heart. My mother has taught me many things. And I've experienced many things with her, such as poverty. I've learned to accept how things are and keep moving forward. Because when it comes down to anything, you're the only person holding yourself down. Above all the lessons my mother has taught me, this is one of the most valuable ones because this is the key to my success which is me. She will only tell me this because she doesn't want to see me fail in anything. When I put my mind to anything, anything is possible. And she, herself, is a great example and inspiration figure for my lifetime.

  3. I try not to look to any high-profile celebrities for inspiration. Just because they are famous, does not mean they are respectable people or better to look up to than any non-famous person. Many celebrities today are rude, immoral, promiscuous, binge-drinkers, drug abusers. Naturally, I would find it strange for any of my peers to admire someone like that. Additionally, some celebrities are arrogant, believing they are better than the people who have made them famous to begin with. Some are simply personas that give the press something to write about. I tend to look up to family, such as my father, my older sister, and my friends. They are honest, down-to-earth people, who do not live in an artificial world of red carpets and have real-world issues. To me, these are the true heroes. These are hard-working, law-abiding people who are simply trying to live their lives as best they can. That is the kind of ethic I believe in, and would try to teach my children, should I ever have any. It is also an ethic one cannot learn from people who are frequently on TV or in magazines. I personally believe that mass media is what truly controls the nation. Think about it; more people seem to care about the "reality" shows than who is running the government and what laws they might pass that could hurt us. By not following any of the propaganda or admiring any of these high-profile figures, I am also making myself more aware of what is really going on in the world. I just hope others can see it my way as well.

  4. I tend to not look to famous athletes, singers, actors, or any other type of high profile entertainers for inspiration. The main reason for this is because, in all honesty, most of them contribute little to society. Personally, I find a lot of inspiration in many established artists. Stan Lee, Tim Burton, Lesean Thomas, and Akira Toriyama are just a few of the ever growing list. To me, artist contribute to everything in society. Unlike most famous people though, most artist get little recognition for their contributions. I kinda find this ironic because society is always making famous people, most recently Eli Manning and Whitney Houston, as these gods and goddesses that barely do anything for society. Artists however are the only people in the world that actually have a chance at playing god. All artist in general shape how most of our world is viewed. Without artist, we wouldn't have the clothes on our back, the cartoons and movies we watch, nor the houses we live in. Anyone can argue and say that other famous people other then artist have done something for society, such as making good music or putting on a good performance for a movie. This may be true, but the fact still remains that the job of a visual artist is extremely underrated and much harder then it appears. Artistic people, which are closely viewed by society as left handed people, are the minority of society. Maybe if our countries were run by people like Stan Lee or Lesean Thomas, then maybe a lot of the world's issues would be resolved more "artisticly" versus declaring war on one another. As I said before, that is just a small group of people I admire, for the simple fact that I enjoy the contributions they have made to society. Sadly, throwing a football and rapping is part of the many things that doesn't really help society, but is instead, overrated by many.

  5. Even though there are some high-profile people that could be other people's insiration, I personally would not look up to one of them. I do not know what their personality is like behind the camera. Some celebrities have reality shows to show their "life outside of the stage/court" but I don't believe it because I feel that it is scripted. Most of the time, celebrities have reality shows just for extra money. If I looked up to someone who was the greatest singer/dancer/actor in the world but they were obnoxious, then i would no longer be looking up to the most famous person in the world. I will be looking up to the most ignorant person in the world. Sooner or later I will pick up their bad habits. I would like to look up to someone who has good morals and has respect for others. Many people look up to entertainers or atheletes because they like that sport, song, or movie that they performed in. However, we do not know how they are socially and the gossip sites aren't the best place to find information out. Don't get me wrong, I do favor some songs/movies over others, but I wouldn't consider them an actual role-model. There are few celebrities that help out the society and less-fortunate places. Oprah and Michael Jackson are two people who almost everyone looks up to. Even though we may not know them on a personal level, we can tell that they are generous and unselfish people. Imagine if everyone in the world didn't help a cause and was selfish. Our society would be gone in a matter of weeks! So, there are some high-profile people that can be looked up to. It's just up to that person to follow the positives or the negatives of that person's life.

  6. I would say the there is no one who inspires me for long for any one reason. The influential thoughts of various people, their ideas, and their achievements in their life come and go. The stream of thought is too strong for any person to hold on to the mindfulness or the fascination of any one person or a thing of a worldly nature for too long. If you look closely, you will find, especially in this day and age, that things go out of fashion far too quickly. The people of media and entertainment, for instance, struggle to stay in the limelight so that they may stay visible. Out of sight truly means out of mind in here in this world of flashing images, superficial projections and temporary impressions. However, I have many who have inspired me to thrive for my goal in life. Nothing can make us do something if we are not inspired, and this inspiration which is most powerful comes from within. People can be motivated when they discover themselves and appreciate their uniqueness. This is an art of finding the inner qualities that would ensure that each person can be his or her own inspiration. This is the power of the individual. Each of us has a philosophy we live by. We have a need to believe in something. We seek a foundation upon which we make our decisions. Yes, we all have a free-will. We were created that way so we must find out how to live with value, substance and faith. Nevertheless, what inspires me personally, and constantly, in the middle of all this, is my own inspiration that turns round like a searchlight looking into all nooks and crannies of my existence. I find it fascinating that there are great treasures of knowledge, wisdom, that of natural human courage and endeavor, adventure of genuine curiosity to be found. I like searching and finding things, sometimes things I have already know just to know them afresh in as many different ways as my life can afford. I believe that, as long as I stay within the certainty of my being, it is safe to ask questions and raise doubts. It can be both rewarding and humanly exciting a pursuit.

  7. I don't have a high profile person for inspiration nor pride. I build that up myself. I honestly believe that I don't need a high profile inspiration because once they do something wrong, it'll affect me. But what i do is take advice that's given to me and use it the way i think is right. I just go to people for advice which are my close friends rather than look up to someone. My dad always says, "Be a leader, not a follower." which probably expalins why i don't look up(follow) someone. Its good for people who have low self esteem, insecurity or just a plain shy personality to look up to someone but i believe that if you're able to take advice that's given to you by many different people you encounter,events/stories you heard of and use them to incorporate your own inspirational theory, you don't need a role model which is exactly what I do.

  8. I'd say that if you have someone who you are inspired by then you'll look at what they do real close and imitate the good in it. My uncle is my inspiration because he's always here for me an the things he does and tells me really took me. He went to college and graduated valadictorian of his class and managed to work two part time jobs while still having time to remember his nephew. To me that's impressive, I don't know what you would think of that. That there inspires me to keep trying no matter the situation because there's Always a way to prosper even if it takes forever. An uncle may not seem like a high profile person but if you think of it we all are; people like Jermey Lin are just the ones who are taking or took that extra leap to do what they love. Celebrity wise I'd say John Legend would be my pride and inspiration. Ever since I was young I always wanted to be a musician and he was one who pushed me to get there and still is. His a singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, all hat I'd love to be & perfect. Listening to his music when I need encouragement always helps

  9. The wonderful power of influence. Luckily, I was never sucked into the sadistic world of influence. Personally, I rue every singer, actor, dancer, and performer that is high profiled; yes, I'm jealous, essentially because I am an aspiring actor who has yet to succeed in this judgmental society. At a point, I have looked up to notable performers such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and many more, but as I see them, truly see them, they are a mess; they're "high profile" drug addicts, alcoholics, modernized anarchist yet they have no true symbolic impact on the world besides their talents. Why look up to them? So I can look forward to drugs, alcohol, sex, money, fame, and power? The answer to my food-for-thought question is no. My perception is that of a real world actor who has participated in equity and Broadway shows; I know the REAL truth. There is no pride and inspiration in following their footsteps. True story, I was obsessed with Will Smith at one point. Watched about every movie he starred in and adapted his acting pattern or trait. I attend an audition the following month and the casting director tells me, "Will Smith has not retired nor do we want a replica. Next!" I was used to rejection but what's the point in looking up to them when they're there already? Moral of the story; everyone isn't who they seem they are.

  10. Not really. If i had to choose someone I would pick Alicia Keys. I say not really only because I don't know any of them personally. But Alicia Keys work to me is an inspiration. She writes, direct, and plays the piano very talented female artist. I respect her work because she doesn't degrade herself. You can watch one of her videos and see respectable art. Nothing there is explicit ...I can allow my siblings and cousins to listen and watch her videos knowing they won't pick up trashy and degrading things. The songs she wrote or sung helped me with writing some of my own songs. If I was related to her i would be especially proud of what she has accomplished. Her and some other African American artists show that success is possible for people of color. I am proud to listen to her as a fan because again of what she portrays and she is very careful pñ what she says. She also speaks like an educated person and not many celebs do. I don't know her personal life but i can look to her public life and work as inspirational. -B. Malone

  11. I do not look at celebrities and other high-profile people as sources of inspiration. All those documentaries that show up on TV don't make me any more sympathetic for that person, and to be honest, their hardships and life obstacles do not move me emotionally in the slightest. What's the point of looking up to someone when they contributed little to nothing to our nation's society? However, I do look up to people that I've personally had experience talking to and helped shape the course of my academic career. My old guidance counselor, Mr. Holmes would be such a person. He helped me improve my public speaking skills by entering me in a contest, and always encouraged me to speak up if I had something to say, even if I thought that my comment wouldn't contribute to the discussion. Another source of inspiration would be my parents, who both have backgrounds in Mathematics. If I never actively engaged in conversation with my parents as a child, I would never have taken an interest in mathematics, and wouldn't even consider it as a possible major in college.

  12. Choosing a high- profile person to look up to can be difficult. Mainly because behind the camera, outside of the studio, off- stage, or outside of the hairstyles, there lies a deeper person other than what the media portrays, or tell of that person. Miss Derek J is a famous, male hairstyling guru who is my greatest inspiration, it is truly a dream of mine to someday work alongside him in an extraordinary, elegant, fashionable, hair show. He has class, and presents himself as (a lady), with the hottest shoes, bags, and the best hairstyles. He understands the real meaning of having beautiful hair, and is very passionate about creating beautiful hair for women, and men, everywhere. His creativity has attracted many big names in the music industry, from old time performers, to today's performers such as Kandi, Olivia, and many more. Derek J has a twitter account, which I once followed before, and in the time I followed him I was able to interpret his tweets and learn a little bit more about him personally; he's down to earth. He enjoys his friends, family, shoes, and, of course, HAIR! I plan to work my way to the top and be able to experience the great opportunities he has experienced, coming from a small community. I may not know Derek J personally, but I admire his classiness, elegance, dedication, desire, and fashion!
