"If man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it it because he hears a different drummer." (210) This quote means to me that if you do not follow in the same path as the people you surround yourself around then maybe it is because you are going down a different path than your companions. When I was in 8th grade my friends and I all believed that we were all going to graduate from high school and all attend the same college. However, things did not go as planned when I began to fall into a different way of life that was different from all my friends. As they began to fight, go to parties, and get intoxicated I kept my focus. After a year of watching my friends go down the path that they were going i seperated my self from the because I heard a different drummer than they did. Today, only one of my old companions made it to the 11th grade and all the other 8 have been retained in the previous grades that were supposed to have been passed.
"I am naturally no hermit, but might possibly sit out the sturdiest frequenter of the bar-room..." (90-91). When Thoreau states this, it makes me think that he usually stays at home, but when the time comes he knows how to have fun. This quote realates to me because i am either at home doing work or at dance practice. Once I get all of the important things finished, then i would usually go out with my friends when the time is right. Just because he does not go out every night does not mean that he is not enjoying his life. His simplicity also explains why he does not like going out often. I wouldn't blame him because if you go out every single day then you would get bored of the activity and your friends. This quote goes mostly for students because we have more priorities to take care of. If we neglect these priorities then we would never learn how to take care of ourselves while we are in the real world. Students today need to realize that hard work eventually pays off in the long run. If you do not work hard enough for what you want, then you will not get the results that you wished for. I usually go by the saying, "work now, play later" to motivate me to finish all of the work that I receive during the day. It is really effective because you wouldn't have to worry about your homework or chores when you are home. You could just sit back and relax. Thoreau was one of those people who seemed to lived by that saying also. He stays home to do his work. By the time he has visitors, he would not have any more work to do. He could hang out with those who come to visit him because his priorities are out of the way.
"Love your life, poor as it is." (Thoreau, 212) This quote perfectly resembles me in a crazy and weird way, but still perfect; I hate my life. I think it's too stressful, annoying, hopeless, and just overall depressing. I think, although not fully, that I have a very poor life and sometimes, I need to just enjoy it for what it is. Lately, I've been trying my best to "enjoy the little things" and leave a more simplistic life as Thoreau did. Now, I love the life that I am living because it is so poor. Because of all this stress, hard work, and dedication, I am sure to get accepted into a college of my choice with enough fiscal help for me to graduate college with under $20,000 in loans. Furthermore, when I first read this quote, this was all that was running through my mind. I also think that when Thoreau says love your life, he also means the people in it. I haven't truly been as appreciative, as I would like to be, of the people that are in my life, helping me enjoy every aspect. Without majority of my friends and associates, I would be slumped in a corner, begging for a shoulder to lean on for help besides my educators. Although my life is poor in certain aspects, the rich and cultivated aspects prevail over the bad. That's mainly why I said this quote it basically a summary of my life.
"The material was pure, and his art was pure; how could the result be other than wonderful?" (211) I feel this quote relates to me extremely well, based off the fact that I'm an artist. On practically all of my projects and final pieces, I always put forth my best effort. No matter how many times laziness tries to do me over, I always try to get the job done. I even do my best to look for the best art supplies to buy in order to make my work stand out from others. I see myself as an innovator and my supplies are close to what a professional would be using. Well, atleast close enough to what a highschooler can actually afford these days. Thus, this makes me believe that my "art" and "material" is pure. Unlike others though, I usally view most of my finished pieces as the opposite of wonderful; After a day or so, I just want to scrap the drawing. So, in a weird way, it's like the first half of the quote fits me perfectly, while the second half goes against my nature. Despite my ideas and tools of the trade being my best resources, I just feel that I always make amateur mistakes that I know a professional would never make. This just shows me however that practising is the only true way for me to progress. It doesn't matter if you have some fancy markers or some super expensive paper. If the artist doesn't have the skills to use their resources to the fullest, then you aren't creating art; You're just creating something that you'll end up hating later on.
"However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names."(212). This quote is definitely what's always been in my mind because i believe anyone ca be self-reliant, self-actualizing, and self-sufficient. As children, we were none of these things, and many people remain children all of their lives. Being self-reliant does not mean getting your own car and your own apartment; that just swaps you from one dependency to another; it means making your own decisions about who you are and what you want to do with your life. Being self-actualizing means that you don't sit around waiting for someone, such as the US Army, to do something to you but that you actively seek your own direction and purpose. Lastly, being self-sufficient means that you learn how to do things for yourself. It's impossible to learn how to do everything, and it would be foolish to try to do so, but it's rewarding and economical to solve many of life's problems on your own.If you can be those things, you don't need live a life you don't want just to acquire money, a big house, fine cars, expensive foods and wines, etc. because these things are not valuable. A true person who can live life simpler finds true wealth in personal experience, the beauty of Nature, the quest for knowledge, self-exploration and discovery, plain foods, and simple healthy transportation, such as walking, cycling, and skating. I would expect people can be tolerant towards people of other cultures, religions, beliefs, and behaviors because he/she would recognizes that there is more than one pathway to the truth. On the other hand, a person with a simple life would not agree with the nonsensical notion that any way of thinking or doing is just as good as any other.
The quote from Walden that relates to me reads, "An man has hardly need to count more than his ten fingers, or in extreme cases he may add his ten toes, and lump the rest." In particular, this quote means that someone should not be greedy, and unappreciative of the things and people they are surrounding with. Thoreau further explains this quote with the sentences, "Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! I say let your affairs be as two, or three,.." I feel that this statement relates to me in regards to the amount of all types of relationships I share with other people; I am often expanding them. Over the past two years of my high school life, I have learned to not be greedy, and in a way fend off of those relationships, but value the few great ones I have, and the rest are still greatly appreciated. Thoreau's statement leads me to another quote, from an unknown author, "Count your blessings." A similarity between the two can be that your most valuable blessings, or valuable things, are no more than the ten fingers you have. They are to be kept I n the simplest form as possible. In this manner they are things which you cannot survive without. For instance, my hearing aids would be one of my "ten fingers," or something of treasurer value. Without my hearing aids, I am unable to hear anything, which then deprives me of my auditory experience in life. Hearing the birds tweet, a newborn baby's cry, the laughter of other people and happiness, just to name a few, are some things I could not experience. Therefore, I show great appreciation toward my hearing aids. I clean when they need to be cleaned, change the batteries, and get its yearly check-ups from the doctor. They are a part of me, as well as my glasses, personal relationships, school, etc. I will remember to keep in mind the simplicity of valuable things in my life, thanks to Thoreau, because this quote, as well as many others, encourages me to keep my life simple, on only ten fingers, but also show appreciation for the extra "ten toes."
"The light that puts out our eyes is darkness to us. Only that day dawns to which we are awake."(216) This quote relates to me because everyday is a new day.Once you close your eyes and go to sleep, your day is instantly new and restarted. You don''t ever have to take a step back because there is no "re-do's". Everyday i wake up and put a smile on my face. I never know what might happen later on. I believe that when you put a smile on your face, better things are to come. But also, it has you ready for any bad surprises. Smiles brighten the day and helps others brighten up their day as well. You can save a life by smiling at another person. People walk around now a days with lots on their mind. This quote reminds me of a seminar i went to. It reminds you that everyday is a new day and everyday starts differently than the one that passed. With a postive look on the future and a smile on your face, you can always hope for the better or face reality no matter how bad it is.
"However mean your life is, meet it and live it;do not shun it and call it hard names."(212)This quote relates to me a lot because at times i ask my self why most things happen to me out of all people. When i would be in a "sticky" situation i would always think or say to myself that its either i'm surrounded by bad luck or life just hates me.This quotes is saying that no matter what challenges come your way you should face it.It is also saying that with all that is happening to you you should not let that stop you from living your life.Every now and again you'll face complications and in today's society people are two-faced and would carry your personal problems out there in the open and have others criticizing the situation your in.You will then feel as though you should walk away from the problem until people forget about it.My understanding of this quote is that you should be happy that you still have life and even though it puts you through some vile situation because you never know when you might take your last breath. To me this quote is saying that there is going to be times when you lose some and win some.
