Which passage from East of Eden speaks to you - type the passage? Explain its impact on you as a reader (do not summarize the passage - this is the time to be insightful and make connections).
"...'And I guess humility must be a good thing, since it's a rare man who has not a piece of it, but when you look at humbleness it's hard to see where its value rests unless you grant that it is a pleasurable pain and very precious. Suffering—I wonder has it been properly looked at.'" (168). I like this quote because he is explicating the small mistakes men make in the distinctions between humility and humbleness. When I read it, my eyes just fell in love.
"I take responsibility," said Samuel. "Long ago i learned this: When a dog has eaten strychnine and is going to die, you must get an ax and carry him to a chopping block. Then you must wait for his next convulsion, and in that moment-----chop off his tail. Then, if the poison has not gone too far, your dog may recover. The shock of pain can counteract the poison. Without the shock he will surely die." (306). I like this quote because he tells that everyone have some kind of thing that just messed you up, and if something else really impact your life, you will become alive again, if not your humanity could be lost forever. You might as well stay dead if something else doesn't shift the new way you take your new life. -Aphnie
"Maybe that's a good thing to keep us humble. The fear of God in us. "(pg 168)
129 years ago, Friedrich Nietzsche stood in front of the world and boldly announced "god is dead." God who just seconds before had been this transcendental, omnipotent being became inconsequential, bothersome, and to some, imaginary. There was only science, the tangible, and coincidence. If we could not see, hear, smell, taste, or touch it, then it did not exist. Thus, we stopped being humble. We became prideful, greedy, insatiable sharks who killed for land, power, and anything that contributed to personal gain . We feared nothing and did everything because if there is no god, there is no judgement,no law, no limit. We became Cain, a proud man, a jealous man, a violent man who did not fear God and thus, brought him an offering that was not fit for him. In a blind rage, he killed his brother. To me, this quote manifests all of humankind's' problems. Eve, who stopped being diffident to God, and Adam, who made Eve his God, subjected us all to a life of misery. And Cain...Cain started a cycle of violence that continues to spin to this day. Humankind's problems does not revolve around global warming, politics or inflating gas prices. Our problems are due to the fact that we stopped fearing god, and thus, stopped caring about the the consequences to our actions. This quote doesn't even have to mean that we need to fear god himself...we just need to have fear of something, or a set of beliefs/morals that will keep us from believing we are invincible.
"Cathy learned that by manipulation and use of this one part of people she could gain and keep power over nearly anyone."(75)
I like this quote because it is a foreshadow over how she treats people throughout the novel. For instance, Cathy manipulates Mr. Edwards, Adam Trask even when she is a young girls she manipulates the whole town into believing she is this perfect young woman who is harmless and would not hurt a fly but on the other hand she a vicious human being who manipulates people and gets them to do what she wants and when things do not go her way she becomes angry and violent and may possible kill them. Just like how she killed her parents and Mr. Edwards they did not give her what she wanted so she killed these innocent people and left them behind with no remorse.
"Adam looked up with sick weariness. His lips parted and failed and tried again. then his lungs filled. He expelled the air and his lips combed the rushing sigh. His whispered word seem to hang in the air: "Timshel!"
I took a liking to this quote because it ended the book with so many thoughts racing through my head. Throughout the story the idea of humans having the power to choose and face their own destiny have steered the story and the lives of the characters. Adam, who tried so hard not to repeat his father's mistakes, fell 100 steps back in his attempt to treat his kids equally and show them the same unyielding love. His sudden heart attack that led to his death was brought on by the news of Aron's death. Now i found this ironic because all along he chose Aron over Cal, who devoted his time and yearned his father's love; Adam, like Cyrus, failed to understand that Cal would ultimately be the son that you hold his last breath. The issue of good vs. evil poses itself throughout this novel to communicate a moral that is essentially that no one is perfectly good. That if one is not willing or able to balance both sides, they will fail to come to realization that they are only human beings; creations that were created to be flawed. -Cassania
"...And I feel that I am a man. And I feel that a man is a very important thing maybemoreimportant thana star. This is not theology. I havenobent toward gods. But I have a new love for that glittering instrument, the human soul. It is a lovely and unique thing in the universe. It is always attacked and never destroyed because 'Thou mayest'." I like this passage because it shows how a good person is rememberedand missed and that everyone is needed on Earth. We are all our own persons and represent one of those stars in the universe except we're the part that makes it stand out and shine. (pg.304- last paragraph of section 2)
"You can boast about anything if it's all you have. Maybe the less you have, the more you are required to boast." (4) I like this quote because I believe that it is very true. For example, if you have many luxurious things, you might think its a normal lifestyle and might never boast about it. However, if you had one luxurious thing you will boast about it due to your excitement from the object. -Phalasade
“I believe a strong woman may be stronger than a man, particularly if she happens to have love in her heart. I guess a loving woman is indestructible.” This quote speaks to me because of how Steinbeck states it in his writing.A woman has more love in her heart than a man.Having love means that you would never break, even when you know that people are taking advantage of your love.If you have love for a person then you forgive them.
Thats Timothy wants to say that Timothy believes :"Maybe you're playing a part on a great stage with only yourself as an audience." pg.295 is a bammmtastic quote! To him it means your doing things for only you to see not others..something like that.
A child may ask, "What is the world's story about?" And a grown man or woman may wonder, "What way will the world go? How does it end and, while we're at it, what's the story about? (pg413, chap. 34) I like this quote because these are examples of some of the questions that I ask to myself from time to time. Everyone wants to find their purpose in life, but it seems like no matter what happens in history, even the eldest of our kind are still left with unanswered questions. It's as if the world will end without anyone knowing why they existed in the first place. -Shaun
"When a child first catches adults out-when it first walks into his grave little head that adults do not have divine intelligence, that their judgments are not always wise, their thinking true, their sentences just-his world falls into panic desolation. The gods are fallen and all safety gone." (19) I like this quote because it embodies the loss of innocence and connects to the Book of Genesis when Adam and Eve eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. When children find out that their adult role models are not perfect or picturesque, they then learn that evrrybody has their faults, their ups and downs. They learn what it means to be human-at least in part.
