As we begin reading East of Eden, what are your first thoughts on the book?

  1. This book is interesting because chapter one uses "I" as if the author is telling a memoir. -Biancia

  2. I thought that the title was signifying that the novel was based around the author's religion.

  5. Just like what Christy said, i thought it was going to be boring and might lose interest in the story, but it turns that i'm looking forward to read the book. I also like how today we discuss in groups about what we thought about the book and i really like it.

  6. - To me the book seemed kind of boring. But as I progressed reading the book it turned out to be okay. I still feel that there are certain chapters that are boring but at the same time there are other chapters that are eye popping.

  7. I'm late but I actually liked the beginning of the book. I loved the first chapter, it was really enticed compared to The Scarlet Letter. The descriptiveness really allowed me to get a vivid picture, almost like I was there. I could literally close my eyes and imagine the text in my mind.

  8. i like it so far. The fact that it's based on the biblical story of Cain and Abel makes it that much more interesting. The bible doesn't really describe the characters or go into depth about their childhood. It just gives you a general summary, while in "East of Eden", Steinbeck is telling you a story.

  9. sorry im so late; but i really enjoyed the first few chapters. The author's use of vocabulary brings a vivid picture to my mind as i read the book. i found it quite easy to get through the first chapter. Also i must add that the vocabulary so far has been very interseting.

  10. When I first started reading this book, I felt as if it had no significance to me as a reader, and I really wondered how it would even be relevant to my life. As I progressed into the second part of the book, I felt that it was interesting, and a little shocking by some of the acts that were committed in the book. On most occasions, I can now enjoy the book because I actually want to know how this will end. I also appreciate the religious remarks in the book.

  12. Right from the beginning, the book was interesting. Mainly because the author waisted no time to describe the characters in the first few chapters. When I first saw the title though, I thought the character's lived in a "garden of Eden" type enviroment.

  13. I really like how the book starts off with the description of the Salinas Valley. The imagery is very colorful and rich. I also like how Steinbeck introduces the characters at the very beginning in Book One; it makes the events of the story and the characters' motives more understandable.
